Skeleton Crew 2019
Paper cut outs and mixed media on faded
algorithm book pages. 40 x 60 inches.
An eerily prescient large mixed media collage completed a couple of months before the Coronavirus pandemic found its way to our shores. The work seems an urgent reminder of how vulnerable we really are to the whims of nature in spite of our vaunted technology, medical advances, and our seeming dominance over all life forms on the planet. It’s all there for those who care to read and heed the message embodied in this compelling work. A human skeleton stands in front of a group of small silhouettes, exercising figures mechanically going through the motions of life, pale semaphores of their own mortality. Set against traces of algorithms – yellowed pages from the 'book of the dead' – these little figures seem unprepared for their fate. The shadow of the contagion darkening the land should sober humanity and drive home the fact that we will reap the environmental destruction that we sow.
