Countdown (Millennial piece) 1990
Stenciled numbers and enamel on chalkboard.
42 .5x 42.5 x 1.5 inches.
An artist's development sometimes entails returning to the spirit of earlier work, to build on an approach, outlook or sensibility. A good example of this is Countdown, a large square blackboard with 36 stenciled letters made in 1990 that harkens back to the experimental word works of Phenomenotes. Made ten years prior to the new millennium, the piece uses a series of numbers that, when read backwards from the lower right hand corner, spell out a vernacular device familiar to anyone who has watched the lift off of a rocket: nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
