Headstone (Laying NO to Rest) 2005
Engraved black slate.
42 x 22 x 2.5 inches.
My original intention when conceiving this work was to
symbolically respond to a problem that can affect artists
whose work has been largely rejected by the mainstream
art world: the internalization of that rejection and the
subsequent questioning of the value or significance of
one's art. For the less serious artist this often spells the
end of a career. Laying NO to rest is in a sense cathartic,
instead of burying a career, a certain refusal is laid to rest.
